Success Institute builds the executive function, emotional regulation, and independent thinking skills that school never explicitly teaches. These are the habits that make everything else work — for every child, in every community.
Reading, math, science. School covers the curriculum. But no one explicitly teaches children how to focus when it is hard, how to manage frustration, or how to think through a problem independently. That gap follows them for years.
Whether a child grows up in Caldwell or East Orange, the foundational skills that determine how well they learn are the same. Success Institute exists to build those skills systematically, measurably, and early — for every child who needs them. Between weekly sessions, students continue learning through Google Classroom — short video lessons, digital flash cards, and reward badges that extend capability development into the home throughout the week. Parents stay actively engaged as partners, not just observers.
One continuous development track from Kindergarten through 12th grade. Each program builds on the last.
Dr. Ricardo Alonso brings a background that very few people in the youth development space can claim. With a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) and eight years as Director of Operations and Vice President of Operations at Matheny Medical and Educational Center — one of New Jersey's premier institutions serving individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities through a hospital, K–21 school, community residences, and adult day programs — he has spent his career at the intersection of institutional leadership and human development.
That combination is not accidental. It is what shaped his understanding of why capable people, children and adults alike, so often fail to perform at the level their ability should allow. The answer, he found, was almost never about intelligence or effort. It was about the foundational skills that nobody ever explicitly taught them.
Success Institute was founded in 2020 out of a conviction formed over three decades in education and executive leadership. The foundational skills that determine how well a child learns — focus, self-regulation, independent thinking — are never explicitly taught. That gap exists in West Essex and in East Orange alike. Success Institute exists to close it for every child who needs it.
Tutoring addresses symptoms. Test prep addresses outputs. Neither addresses the underlying capability gap. Dr. Alonso built Success Institute to do something different. To teach the how that school assumes children already know but never actually teaches.
Dr. Alonso is an Essex County community member. He understands this county — the high expectations of West Essex families and the structural inequities facing families in East Orange — and the specific ways that both environments can leave children without the foundational capabilities they need to perform at the level everyone expects of them.
Success Institute is built for all of Essex County. The program reflects both the standards West Essex families hold and the genuine developmental needs shared by children across every community we serve — regardless of zip code.
A structured K–12 capability development track. Each program builds systematically on the last.
The core program. Twelve weeks of structured capability development targeting the five foundational skills that determine how well every other kind of learning takes hold. Students are assessed at baseline, midpoint, and completion. Parents receive a formal Student Capability Profile at each checkpoint. Between sessions, students continue building capabilities through Google Classroom — short video lessons, digital flash cards, and reward badges that extend learning throughout the week. Parents stay actively involved through weekly digital touchpoints, making this a seven-day-a-week development program, not just a Saturday session.
The full K–12 pathway is in development. Families who begin with Success Foundations will have priority access to each subsequent program as it launches.
Questions about the program, enrollment, or scheduling. Dr. Alonso responds personally to every inquiry.
